It's hard for me to begin creating music without a comfortable music interface. Personally, having had piano experience in the past made this an obvious choice for me. Music is a product of the brain. If you're like me you want to get it recorded before you lose it.

If you can get a decent sound card I would do that too . I use an Axiom 49, i like to control my vsts and mixer through its small interface. Also, in the midi settings you can set the Omni Preview Midi Channel to 1. Using this you can set up your drums 1 by 1, kick snare hats etc...and play them on your keys. So your kick would be mid C, snare D, hat E etc.

I just wanna say u can do the same with or without midi controller. chords in my opinion are easier without, just right click on draw tool in piano roll. make sure you know FL very well before you buy one, to know what exactly what u want. I on the other hand bought a trigger finger, a 49e, a yamaha, and a couple other midi's before I knew all of FLs capabilitys. found myself unplugging them all. OVERLOAD!!! now I had so much more to learn with all these midi's. I had to start over and get the best grip on FL that I could. the more you add the more options you face. and usually the first midi u buy a month after playing u would of bought a different one. so if your budget isnt enough just wait and learn FL a lil better. the better you know FL the more ready youll be for midi. music production is patiants always.

I personally use a combination of both the midi keyboard and QWERTY keyboard. Also mouse editing of course for fine tuning. I find it essential to use the actual keyboard if your playing stuff that needs pitch bend/modulation, variances in velocity, just stuff that should sound natural and non-quantised. Stuff like hiphop, jazz. especially, where you need that human touch. It's also easier to play chords if you got a keyboard. However, for more trance, house type stuff, I sometimes just get away with using just the QWERTY and mouse, I get lazy to hook up my keyboard.

So I would say it's pretty important to get a midi keyboard. Your supposed to PLAY music and feel it. Your not really feeling the whole vibe if your painting in notes with the mouse.
